McCarthy Beach State Park campground closed temporarily as building construction begins

(Released August 19, 2014)

The Side Lake Campground at McCarthy Beach State Park is closed temporarily as construction of a new campground sanitation building began on Monday, Aug. 18.

As a safety measure, the campground will remain closed during the demolition and initial construction phases to accommodate large trucks hauling debris and construction materials. The campground may reopen periodically on a rustic basis for short periods as construction allows. Camping reservations are only being taken for arrivals on or after May 20, 2015.

When complete, the new energy-efficient building will offer expanded restroom facilities with ADA-compliant showers and toilet stalls, and two family-assist restrooms to better accommodate families with young children and visitors with disabilities.

During construction, the swimming beach, picnic area and group camp will remain open.

The boat access in the Side Lake Campground will not be accessible when the contractor is working. Boat launching will be available at the Sturgeon Lake access or at the nearby public water access on the Sturgeon River.

The Beatrice Lake Campground, 7 miles from the park office, will remain open. The rustic campground offers vault toilets and hand pumps. This campground has narrow roadways and is best suited to tents and small trailers. All campsites are first-come, first-served on a self-registration basis.

Current campground status information is available on the park’s Web page, www.mndnr.gov/mccarthy, or by calling the park office at 218-254-7979.
